Shared Reading

Mrs. W.B. is doing shared reading with the kids. The books are large enough so the kids can read together with her. Kids make predictions about words in the book and what might happen next. Shared reading teaches wonderful reading strategies!!

How To Help Your Child At Home

In math, one skill many kids need some additional practice with is counting on. Counting on means when your child is trying to solve an equation or count a number of objects, they are able to recognize a group and not have to count them again to figure out the total. An easy example is your child's fingers. They know that each hand has 5 fingers so when they are counting all 10 fingers, they should be able to say: "5, 6,7,8,9,10," rather than count from 1. In an equation such as 7+4, kids should be able to say "7, 8,9,10,11." One way to practice this is with dominoes. Pick a domino and count on from one side and add it to the other side. This is an important skill for first graders to learn. Thanks for your help!

When reading with your child, talk about the story. The goal of reading is to gain meaning. Without comprehension (meaning), reading is simply following words on a page from left to right.

Ask questions such as...

1. Who are the characters in the story?

2. What is the setting?

3. What is the problem/solution?

4. What connections did you make to the story?

5. How did the story make you feel?

6. In a nonfiction text, what facts did you learn?

USE THE PICTURES! :)

It is important to use the pictures in the book to help figure out what a word says. Also, use the pictures to look for clues in order to understand the story. Pictures are very important when your child is learning to read.
